The checklist below suggests some points to consider when undertaking the consent procedure.
- Is your explanation to the patient clear?
- Do they know what is going to happen?
- Do they know the purpose of the photography
- Do they know who is likely to see the photographs?
- Do they understand that they can withhold their consent if they so wish and control the extent of photography?
- Try to avoid blanket coverage of possible uses as it is more likely to put patients off being photographed.
- Consent to clinical records is implied but additional consent is required for any other use.
- Expressed written consent is preferable.
- Giving consent is not irrevocable, the patient is perfectly entitled to change their mind.
- Working
within a framework ‘Code of practice’ eliminates the confusion should
we, shouldn’t we and provides consistency in approach between
illustrators in the same department.
- The medical illustrator has an important role in the development, presentation and design of an organised policy.
