Evaluation of my teaching and learning support activities
is undertaken formally through questionnaires, used school-wide, feedback
from assessment work undertaken by students especially examinations which
I have used over a period of time to revise my teaching methodology. For
example, through the answers to questions it was clear that though some
students clearly understood the concepts behind exposure and its relationship
to aperture, film speed and shutter speed many did not so I revised my way
of teaching this so all students understood which was reflected in improved
answers in subsequent years.
A wider instance of this practice has been my participation
in peer evaluation culminating in working with colleagues through a Peer
Assessment workshop to look at its implementation in different courses and
establish principles of good practice for use in the Biological Imaging
programme and others throughout the school.
A recent OMST session looked at how I used a computer dataprojection
system within a classroom context which received good feedback from the
observer.
"Excellent use was made of the computer throughout
the session. The projector assisted this very well. Good room layout
so all students were part of the session. Well planned with thought given
to this aspect."
"Time was allocated from early in the session for
student questions which were forthcoming. Some students demanded more
than others. The response from the tutor was always enthusiastic and
informative which directly fitted the needs of the students."
I regularly undertake reading to keep myself aware of changes
in teaching and learning through the ALT Journal and within the area between
my professional practice and teaching through the Journal of Audiovisual
Media in Medicine (JAMM). I also subscribe to a number of e-mail lists which
keep me up-to-date with changes in teaching and learning and the availability
of resources on the internet and elsewhere.
A growing area of development I have been involved in is the
use of the internet in teaching keeping myself up-to-date in practice, presenting
workshops to staff and students on other programmes. For example, leading
days and half-day workshops in Web Design, Using Dreamweaver and Fireworks,
HTML Workshop - Computers in Art and Design Education, University of Derby,
Introduction to using the World Wide Web to Level 0 students
I am following up this activity through a TQEF project on "The
impact of integration of web resources and support into future strategies
for module teaching and learning".
Part of my personal development over the last 18 months, putting into practice
skills I demonstrate, has been to establish my own website incorporating photographs,
teaching materials and published papers of interest to students and colleagues.
