2. A brief history of sponsorship (Britain)

1965 - Banning of advertising for cigarettes and tobacco on TV;

From around this time there was an increase in the number of television sets in households in the UK.

1984 - Business Sponsorship Incentive Schemes. Companies were able to gain rebates of 1/3 of their sponsorship spend under the Conservative Government.

Discussion points:

"Non-invasive"?

A 'piratical form of advertising'?

In 1972 Mintel estimated the value of the UK sponsorship market at £12.5 m, by 1980 their estimate had risen to £35 m and by 1990 this had reached approx. £228 m.
