7. Tips for would be sponsors
What is it you hope to gain? (if you can't answer this - don't do it!)
- Be selective (choose on merit AND on opportunity for publicity)
- Plan carefully - have a set policy on the number of sponsorships
you will do in a year. Budget for this number and stick to it.
- Capitalise on your chosen event.
- Quote from "Sponsored Riders" article Cycle Industry, Sept. 1992
- "Even if you are not the main sponsor if you are the most media-aware
you can be the one to get publicity".
- Use point of sale material
- Establish - are you sole sponsor?
- Can you name be included in the title?
- Could you provide promotional material/clothes with your name on?
- Is your sponsee a potential future champion?
- Work at developing contact - (With just 1 or 2 well placed journalists
you may be able to 'place articles about your shop/product at regular
intervals).
- Consider drawing up an agreement at the start of your sponsorship.
- Have a contingency plan just in case matters do not go according
to plan.
