Classification of textile fibres for sportswear

The classification of fibres is usually based on origin and chemical nature. A convenient initial sub-classification involves dividing fibres into natural fibres and man-made fibres; although the term man-made fibres is criticised for obvious reasons, no acceptable alternative has found common use.

Natural

Animal (protein) - keratin (wool) and fibroin (silk).

Vegetable (cellulose) - seed (cotton).

Manufactured

Regenerated

Synthetic

Cellulose - true cellulose (viscose, modal, lyocel). Rubber. Mineral - metal and carbon.

Polyamide - polyamide/nylon 6, polyamide/nylon 6.6, aramids. Polyester. Acrylic - normal and modacrylic Polyolefines - polythene and polypropylene Elastanes - polyurethanes, polyesters (PBT, PTT). Polyvinyls - polyvinyl chloride and copolymers.
